NuvaRing® uses the latest in drug delivery technology and represents the state-of-the-art in contraception. Becoming available for the first time in 2002, it is an innovative vaginal contraceptive method, providing protection for 1 month. NuvaRing® consists of a soft plastic ring with an outer diameter of 5.4 cm. It is easily inserted into the vagina by the user, and once inserted can be left in place for 3 weeks. During this time it releases 15 mcg ethinylestradiol and 120 mcg etonogestrel every 24 hours, thereby inhibiting ovulation. These hormones enter the body through the vaginal wall, allowing lower dosing than with oral administration.
After 3 weeks the ring is easily removed by the user. During the subsequent ring-free week, most women experience a withdrawal bleed. Another ring is then inserted exactly 1 week later.
Trials in North America and Europe have confirmed that NuvaRing® is a highly effective form of contraception, offering a similar efficacy to that of modern combined oral contraceptives. The method is also well tolerated and highly acceptable to women. |
